Serena Forlati

Full professor of International Law, Director of the Department of Law at the University of Ferrara, as well as a Member of the Executive Committee of Macrocrimes – Centre for European Legal Studies on Macro-Crime. She is the co-coordinator of MaCrOLab, the inter-disciplinary research group on mafia and other forms of organized crime that she co-founded in 2011.
She is the author of two monographs, editor of several books (including “La lotta alla tratta di esseri umani – Fra dimensione internazionale e ordinamento interno”, Napoli, Jovene, 2013; “Redefining Organised Crime – A Challenge for the European Union?”, with S. Carnevale and O. Giolo, Oxford, Hart, 2017), and of numerous articles and papers. Her research interests currently focus on international courts and tribunals and international human rights law and its interaction with international criminal law.

Alessandra Annoni

Associate Professor of International Law at the Department of Law of the University of Ferrara; coordinator of the law degree programme, member of the Executive Committee of the Centre for European Legal Studies on Macro-Crime – Macrocrimes and co-coordinator of the Core Crimes cluster. She is the author of a monograph on military occupation (L’occupazione “ostile” nel diritto internazionale contemporaneo, Turin, 2012), a monograph on Recognition as a Unilateral Act of States (Il riconoscimento come atto unilaterale dello Stato, Naples, 2023) and co-author, with F. Salerno, of a textbook on the protection of human beings in times of armed conflict (La tutela internazionale della persona umana nei conflitti armati, Bari, last edition 2023). She has also written extensively on international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international criminal law.

Costanza Bernasconi

Associate Professor of Criminal Law at the Department of Law, University of Ferrara, where she teaches Criminal Law and Environmental Criminal Law.
She is a member of the “Associazione Italiana dei Professori di Diritto Penale”.She is part of the scientific committee of the journals Discrimen and Lexambiente. Rivista di diritto penale dell’ambiente. Her research activity is mainly focused on the area of environmental criminal law and criminal law in the field of economics. She also has a special interest in the protection of minors and their legal status.

Baldassare Pastore

Full Professor of Legal Philosophy at the Department of Law of the University of Ferrara, where he teaches Philosophy of Law, Legal Methodology and Logic, and Knowledge and Teaching of the Law. He was Dean of the Faculty of Law and a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Ferrara.
He is President of the “Società italiana di Filosofia del diritto”.
He has published numerous works (including several books) concerning legal theory, theory of legal interpretation, human rights and cultural pluralism.

Orsetta Giolo

Associate Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Ferrara Department of Law, where she teaches philosophy of law, sociology of law and legal clinics. She is a member of the teaching staff of the Doctoral School in Studies on Organized Crime of the University of Milan.
Since 2010 she has been coordinating, together with Lucia Re, the inter-university work group on the political subjectivity of women. Editor of the journal Jura Gentium and co-founder, with Stefania Carnevale and Serena Forlati, of the Laboratorio Interdisciplinare di studi sulle mafie e le altre forme di criminalità organizzata – MaCrO.

Ilaria Aquironi

Research Fellow in International Law at the Department of Law of the University of Ferrara, Adjunct Professor of Private International Law and Legal English, and Lawyer of the Verona Bar Association.
Her main research interests focus on judicial cooperation in civil matters and reparation of the victims of international crimes.

Giulia Rossi

Graduated with honors in 2023 from the University of Ferrara with a thesis entitled “Life Imprisonment as an Inhuman and Degrading Treatment: The Italian Case in the European Context”.
Currently, she is enrolled in the 39th cycle of the PhD program in European Union Law and National Legal Systems at the University of Ferrara, working on a research project titled “Reparation in Case of Unlawful Appropriation or Destruction of Cultural Heritage in the European and International Context” supervised by Professors Forlati and Annoni.

Maria Fiore Angori

PhD Candidate in the PhD programme in European Union Law and National Legal Systems at the University of Ferrara with a research project in International criminal law, supervisor Professor Alessandra Annoni.
She graduated with honors in Law in April 2023 at the University of Perugia, discussing a thesis in Criminal Law entitled ” NGOs Humanitarian Assistance and Smuggling of migrants”.Since May 2023, she has been collaborating within the Criminal Law chair at University of Perugia. Since June 2023, she has been doing an internship under Art. 73 d.l. 69/2013 at the Criminal Court of Perugia.

Enrico Zannarini

Research Fellow in International Law at the University of Ferrara. In 2025, he obtained with honors his PhD in European Union Law and National Legal Systems within the framework of a joint doctoral programme between the University of Ferrara and the University of Granada. He discussed a thesis entitled “The European Union and the Responsibility to Protect: Halting and Preventing International Core Crimes within the Common Foreign and Security Policy”, under the supervision of Professors Serena Forlati and Carmela Pérez Bernárdez.

Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa

Francesca Capone

Associate Professor of International Law at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa.. She holds a joint Ph.D. in international law from Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and Tilburg University, earned in 2013. She has been a visiting fellow and a guest lecturer at several academic institutions across Europe, including Leiden University, Tilburg University and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and beyond Europe, i.e. Addis Ababa University. She has undertaken research on a wide range of topics, focusing in particular on international humanitarian law and counter-terrorism.

Alessandro Mario Amoroso

Postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in international law at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. His work focuses on international law and armed conflict, in particular international humanitarian law, human rights law, international criminal law, and the law of the use of force.. Before joining academia, he was a Legal Adviser at the International Committee of the Red Cross and a Programme Officer in Security and Law at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. He holds a PhD in Human Rights and Global Politics from the Sant’Anna School and an LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy.

Marta Stroppa

PhD candidate in Human Rights and Global Politics at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. Her main research interests encompass new technologies (in particular, autonomous weapons systems and cyber capabilities) and international law on the use of force, international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and international criminal law. She was a Visiting Scholar at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and at the University of Westminster, and she worked at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations and at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in International Relations from the University of Milan, and an LLM in International and European Law from Tilburg University.

Matteo Colorio

PhD candidate in International Law (PhD Programme in Human Rights, Global Politics and Sustainability) at Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. Matteo holds a Law Degree from the University of Trento and an LL.M. from Washington University in St. Louis. His research interests focus on International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law.

Rosaria Sicurella

Full Professor of Criminal Law. From the beginning of her academic career, she has focused her study and publications mainly on the topics of European Criminal Law and International Criminal Law. She obtained a Master Degree in European Law at the College of Europe, and a Master in “Droit pénal et politique criminelle en Europe” at the University of Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris I). She has been (and continues to be) involved in various European projects and studies (also as Principal investigator), and She has been lecturing in many Universities abroad. She is a member of the Scientific or Editorial Board of various Italian and European reviews/journals. She is vice-President of the European Criminal Law Centre.

Salvatore Zappalà

Full Professor in International and EU Law at the University of Catania.
He has taught at the Universities of Pisa (2000-2005) and Florence (“Cesare Alfieri”) (2004-2007). He has also taught courses at various other universities in Italy and abroad. Since 2011 he is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of International Criminal Justice (published by Oxford University Press) and since 2012 the co-editor of the series “Oxford Monographs in International Humanitarian and Criminal Law”.
From 2010 to 2018 he was the Legal Advisor to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York and the representative of Italy in the Sixth Committee (legal affairs) of the UN General Assembly. He has previously worked at the UN Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, ICTY (1995-1998), as well as at the EUI (2003-2006).
His research interests are mainly in the area of Public International Law. 

Valeria Scalia

Associate Professor of Criminal Law at the Department of Law of the University of Catania.
Her main research topics deal with the relationship between protection of fundamental rights and criminal law in different fields (i.e. immigration, privacy and data protection and environment) and corruption in a European, international and comparative perspective, even in its interactions with organised crime. She participated in some national and international research projects and she spent some research periods abroad. She is a member of the Italian Association of Criminal Law Professors, International Association of Penal Law, the Centro di diritto penale europeo in Catania. 

Amalia Orsina

Researcher in Criminal Law at the University of Catania. She holds the Diploma of the “Scuola Superiore di Catania” (Mediterranean University Center for excellent students), the PhD together with the Label of Doctor Europaeus as well as a post-doctoral DAAD scholarship (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). She published both books and scientific papers on various topics of criminal law and economic criminal law, including criminal negligence, corporate criminal liability, criminal protection of health and safety at work and food safety. She carried out several research stays abroad (in the UK and in Germany) and she participated in some national and international research projects.

Annalisa Lucifora

Researcher in Criminal Law at the University of Catania. She held an International Ph.D. in ‘European Criminal Policy’. She was InterTalentum – Marie Curie Fellow at the Autonoma University of Madrid. Her main research topics are the following: labour exploitation and human trafficking, the criminal control of irregular immigration and the criminal protection of the environment. She participated in some national and international research projects on these topics. She spent some research periods abroad.

Ugo Santoro

Research fellow in Criminal Law at the University of Catania.
In 2018 he graduated cum laude from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, discussing a thesis in Criminal Law entitled “The principle of legality in criminal matters, between legislative law and case law”. He has been a member of the Catania Bar Association since February 2022. In 2023 he spent two research periods abroad, at the University of Valencia and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg. In June 2024 he earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Law at the University of Catania, defending a thesis entitled “Criminal law protection of cultural heritage”.

Giulio Bartolini

Full professor of international law at Roma Tre University where is also in charge of the International Humanitarian Law Legal Clinic and lecturer at the Geneva Academy of IHL and HRs. Prof. Bartolini is President of the Scientific Committee, IHL Section, of the Italian Red Cross, Member of the Italina MFA Commission for the Study and Development of IHL and coordinator of the working group set-up by the Italian Ministry of Defence to draft the Military Manual on International Law Applicable to International Missions.

Alice Riccardi

Associate professor of international law at the Department of Law of Roma Tre University. Sheis a member of the Italian Red Cross Scientific Committee, IHL Section; of the Working group at the Italian Ministry of Defence on the drafting of the Italian Military Manual on International Law applicable to International Missions; of the Managing committee of the research center “European Penological Center” (Roma Tre, Department of Law); of the Italian Society of International Law Interest Group on international law and armed conflicts; of the Macrocrimes research center (Ferrara, Department of Law). Prof. Riccardi worked at the International Criminal Court and at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.. She writes in particular about international criminal law, international human rights law and protection of migrants.

Antonella Massaro

Associate professor of criminal law at the Department of Law of Roma Tre University, where she teaches courses on Criminal law II, European criminal law, Law and Gender, Criminal law at the cinema and co-directs the Gender-based violence and multiple discriminations Legal Clinic. She directs the advanced training course “Penalty, criminal trial and Constitution” and she is a member of the Managing committee of the research center “European Penological Center” and of the research center “Osservatorio Giuridico sulla Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale” (Roma Tre University). Antonella Massaro co-directs the review “Arte e diritto” (Art and Law) and she is component of several scientific and referees review committees.

Laura Di Gianfrancesco

Post-Doc Research Fellow at the Law Department of Roma Tre University.
She earned her PhD in International Law with honours in 2022 at the Roma Tre Law Department, in joint-supervision with the University of Luxembourg, with a dissertation on the interpretation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Her research interests focus on international human rights law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law and the law of international organizations.
